Researchers in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research activity, including the period of research training, since gaining a university (or equivalent institution of higher education) degree giving access to doctoral studies in the country in which the degree was obtained (the degree must entitle the holder to embark on doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications) and who have not yet obtained a doctoral degree.
Experienced Researcher (ER)Researchers having at least 4 but no more than 10 years of research experience (full-time equivalent) since gaining a university degree giving them access to doctoral studies (the degree must entitle the holder to embark on doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications) in the country in which the degree was obtained or already in possession of a doctoral degree, independently of the time taken to acquire it.
The candidates shall fulfil these requirements at the starting date of the ESR or ER contract. For instance, an ESR contract could start just few weeks before getting the Ph D degree.
To ensure the European character of Research Training Networks, the early-stage or experienced researchers are normally required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move country) when taking up their appointment:
Researchers must be nationals of a State other than that of the host organisation. At the start of their contract, researchers may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference deadline for eligibility. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
